Otto Neals is our featured artist in PLG Arts' 1st Annual Group Show, celebrating the visual arts in Brooklyn on display through June 8th 2008 at K-Dog & Dune Buggy Cafe, located at 43 Lincoln Rd. Brooklyn NY. The reception is Friday, May 23rd 7-9pm. Mr. Neals is a long time resident of Brooklyn and for the most part a self taught artist, with brief apprenticeships at The Brooklyn Museum Art School with Isaac Soyer and the Bob Blackburn Printing workshop under the tutorships of Krishna Reddy, Roberto De Lomanica and Mohammed Khalil.
In addition to painting in oils, watercolors, pastels and printmaking, he is proficient in wood and stone carving. The late painter and sculptor, Vivian Schuyler Key was responsible for his introduction to stone carving when she presented him with his first set of stone carving tools.
Mr. Neals has a permanent and interactive sculpture located in Prospect Park, Imagination Playground, near Lincoln Road Entrance. The visual form features bronze figures of a boy abandoning his chair to a contoured basalt boulder. There he sits reading a book with his dog by his side. The sculpture is titled Peter and Willie, well known and beloved character of Ezra Jack Keats. The play sculpture is funded by the Ezra Jack Keats' foundation in a memorial to EJ Keats, a Brooklynite. The sculpture is inspired by Keats' book, Peter's Chair.
For 36 years Mr. Neals worked as an artist creating signs, posters and illustrations for the Postal Service. His 4x8 foot oak relief carving titled "The Spirit of '76" is still in the General Post office at Cadman Plaza in downtown Brooklyn.
Mr. Neals works can be seen in both public and private collections in Brooklyn and beyond, including magazines and books, as well as PLG own Dorsey's Art Gallery. PLGarts is proud to have Mr. Neals as our featured artist, as well as introducing our other artists in our showcase: He can be reached at ottoneals@aol.com or www.OttoNeals.com or (718)462-9425.
Robert Marvin has been a photographer for over forty years and a resident of PLG for over 30 years. Bob concentrates entirely on monochrome images made with the sort of manual equipment with which he learned photography in the late '50s. His work is archival printed on fiber paper in a traditional "wet" darkroom. Bob is a member of a number of Brooklyn-based arts groups including, PLG Arts, the Ft. Greene Photography Organization, the Brooklyn Waterfront Artist's Coalition [BWAC], and the Brooklyn Camera Club. This project would not have been possible if not for efforts and hard work that Bob put into making this show possible. He can be reached at: (917) 207-6807 or E-mail: marvbe@earthlink.net or Portfolio at: www.robert.marvin.brooklynartist.com.
Jo Pendola is a painter mostly of (NYC) cityscapes and mostly oil on canvases. She can be reached at Jopendola.com or contact her: Jopendola@hotmail.com.
Karl A. McIntosh's work have been exhibited at numerous venues across the country including Dorsey's Art Gallery, The Skylight Gallery, MoCada (The Museum of Contemporary Diasporian Art), 843 Gallery, The National Black Fine Art Show, Color: The Chicago Black Fine Art Exposition, The Fulton Art Fair, The George Washington Carver Gallery, The Red Piano Too (St. Helena SC), McIntosh is also proud to add the Brooklyn Museum to his already impressive list. He was mentioned in the April 16th, 2004 edition of the New York Times in an article in connection with "Open House" the Brooklyn Museum exhibition. Some call McIntosh a folk artist, others call him primitive, some say he's an "outside" the mainstream artist, but what ever the title, most would probably agree that an apt description of McIntosh is that he is simply a genius.
Efrat Baler is a PLG artist whose works have been exhibited in Israel, Germany and the US. "THE CASE OF THE MISSING DOG" featured in this show was recently exhibited in "Tracing Shadows" an exhibition at the Youth Wing of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, Israel. The 10x8x8 painting is part of a larger body of work named CASEWORK. The works in this series are 3-dimensional box shaped paintings that combine painting, text and three-dimensional objects on the front and back of canvases that are joined together. The paintings in the series have text written on one of the case's sides and contain the word "case" in a phrase or word. The works are humorous at times and are mostly art about art. The paintings represent a virtual tour of a painting; it's different sides (physically and metaphorically). Efrat is a graduate of the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem and has lectured on the history of Israeli Art at the San Francisco Public Library and in campuses across the West Coast. To learn more about Efrat, she can be reached at (718) 541-9531 or E-mail ef4art@verizon.net or http://www.geocities.com/ef4art.geo/.
Janet L. Bohman has been painting since the age of five. In the late 1970's her work moved away from two dimensional painting into small scale painted relief in both lined and folded paper. Since then the evolution has continued resulting in large scale painted relief and works in the round. Throughout the period, her philosophy that art should be beautiful and should contribute to the emotional well being and aspirations of the viewer have prevailed. Her strong color patterns and soaring imagery are intended to provide the viewer with a sense of serenity in a hectic world. Janet holds a Master of Arts, New York University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Pratt Institute.

Lou Howort is a photographer and a resident of Brooklyn. He seeks to portray nature in a realistic manner that captures two of its constants Ð motion and change. Most people visit Prospect Park during the warm months. Those who miss the changes brought to the park by winter also miss the changes in the behavior of the birds. The birds in this photo are startled by his presence. Lou writes had he been in the same spot at the same time of day during the summer, these birds would have come to where he stood, seeking food. Having not seen people for a couple of months, his wintertime presence was perceived as a threat, they all took flight at the same instant. All materials that Lou uses are acid free and archival.
